Auctioneer Spotlight: Arturo Torrez and Claudie Lintvelt

In Cruise Art Auctions at Sea, Peter Max, Romero Britto, Uncategorized

Many of our Park West collectors develop friendships with the art teams over the course of their land or sea vacations. Here’s a chance to get to know them more as they share their favorite adventures in the art world.

Arturo, principal auctioneer, is from the Bronx in New York City and has been an international art dealer on cruise ships since July 2010. Claudie, Auctioneer Assistant, is from Graafwater, South Africa and began in May 2011. Arturo and Claudie are an auctioneer couple on the ships and are recently engaged!

Current ship: Norwegian Getaway

What do you like most about being an auctioneer?
Arturo: I really enjoy entertaining guests with an auction experience that they do not expect on their cruise vacation. Also, I like introducing clients to the world of collecting art. It is no secret collecting art can be bit intimidating, so I like to assist clients to become knowledgeable, confident and happy with the art they collect.

Who is your favorite Park West artist and why?
Arturo: I really enjoy the works of Peter Max. One reason may be that I’m a New Yorker and he’s a New Yorker. Also, I enjoy his life story. He and his family were uprooted from Germany due to conflict; however, after 16 years of travelling, the world they came to harbor in New York City. They finally felt freedom and liberty. Of course, his ability to bring color together really amazes me.

Claudie: I love the art of Romero Britto. Some works of art can be confusing to understand or too dark, but Britto’s artwork just brings a smile to everyone that looks at it and allows anyone to feel comfortable with his art. He is also an artist that gives back to his community in various ways and is recognized the world over. He was also the official artist of the 2010 World Cup of Soccer, which was held in my home country, South Africa!

What is your favorite guest memory?
Arturo: The memory we’ll never forget is with Dan and Jeanette M. who are guests Claudie and I still keep in touch with today. They were on the Carnival Pride out of Baltimore, during which they acquired a great collection. However, Jeanette had her eye on a Max “Blushing Beauty” she saw earlier that cruise that she really wanted. She finally got it at the last auction and it brought her to tears; she was so happy it was hers. At that moment, I realized this is more than just buying art – I’m actually bringing memories into peoples’ lives that will forever hang in their homes and live on through their families. To quote Picasso, “The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to give it away,” and I’m lucky to say I found my gift with art.

What has been your favorite port?
Arturo: Claudie and I went to Amsterdam for a week on my birthday in October 2013. It was a week I’ll never forget. We had a week in-between ship assignments and were in Barcelona, so we decided to fly to Amsterdam to meet up with one of Claudie’s childhood friends. We went to all the great museums, from the Rijksmuseum to the Van Gogh Museum to Rembrandt’s house in Amsterdam. We even went to Leiden where Rembrandt was born. I loved it all – a city with so much history and countryside with unbelievable scenery. If I could, I would live there in a heartbeat, as long as I could still do what I love with art.

Tell us about how you met through working abroad and your recent engagement?
Claudie: We met at auctioneer training in May 2011. Arturo was going out to his next ship as gallery director before getting his own ship as an auctioneer and I was brand new to the art auctions. We kept in contact over the next year and in December 2012 I joined him as gallery director on the CCL Pride.

Over the last two years we have worked together on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival and Norwegian. In November 2014 I went home for a three-week work break and he bought the ring while I was gone. During the first week back from vacation he proposed during a show in the Illusionarium on the NCL Getaway and I said, “Yes!”

I met both on the magic in September did not know that they were a couple but felt it. claudie was realy energetic high energy person who lights up a room and Arturo was a big commanding looking guy who was as more like a teddy bear and real nice down to earth person and was real helpful ( some auctioneer are not so personable and some a bit pompous). I would like to wish them both the best and a long life of happens together.

Arturo and Claudie were a delight to work with on our cruise in October on the Carnival Magic. We acquired 9 paintings and couldn’t be happier with them and the buying experience. Claudie was a joy for our little girl to go see and she still talks about her friend Claudie from the ship to this day. If you get a chance to work with these two you will be working with a great duo. Congrats on your engagement! We expect an invitation, haha!

Well you two, I thought there was a special spark. You might remember me on the Getaway. I was the crazy Canadian guy that fell in love with 6 – Csaba Markus darlings. I was the one who had that portrait taken with my darlings.

They have finally arrived and I am in love myself… all over again.

Best wishes from Bidding Card 151
Arturo, do you remember when I bid twice on the same painting and you passed it off and said don’t worry I have your back?

Thank you. You were both great and so much fun. Best adventure of my life.

We had the pleasure of going on a Carnival cruise out of Sydney. Watching Arturo and Claudie work as a team was tremendous. Their knowledge, empathy and sincerity helped us purchase 3 beautiful Itzchak Tarkays which we will enjoy for the rest of our lives. We are pleased that the “business” team are now joined as a “life” team. Congratulations to you both !!

What a delightful surprise to see the two of you in Jan, 2015, edition in “parkwestgallery.com” ! Claudie, was a true blessing to me, with Thomas Kincade art I purched nov. 9th on NCL ship Get A Way. I bought 9 pcs. at the Auction & didn’t sleep at all that night. First thing the next am, I went straight to Claudie, ( my eldest daughter Sherry, came to help me ) as I tearfully cried , to tell Claudie, I was not financially able to purchase all that I did. By then I was visually shaking ! In a heart beat, Claudie, had me wrapped in her arms & assured me, we could & would be able to work this out :] . Then for the 3rd time she helped me walk me back to my cabin !! What a shinning example of love & compassion she did not only for me , but demonstrated for love of her work and the company as well ! She gave me her personal e- mail address :] This is a true story with a very true ending … for me & a great beginning on her their engagement !!! Oh, yes, I did meet her future husband on my cruise, he was the Art Auctioneer. Between he, Claudie & myself “they” did make every thing work out … I am now a proud owner of 5 new pieces of Thomas Kincade to add to my collection ! God Bless you! I have high regards for Park West Gallery & look forward in the future to be doing more business with them. Integrity comes from every time I call the Gallery. Will you be so kind enough to pass this comment along& to Claudie ? Just in the event she has another email address since the engagement . I know she will remember me. I’m only 4 feet 6 ins in highth. & I was in poor Heath , rented a scooter, brown short hair & my daughter Sherry is short & very plump, with red hair, while I am very short & very thin. We shared many things as we walked to & from my cabin & even helped me shop on board ! Yes she will remember me :] Arturo will also. Ty for indulging me with such a long request in forwarding this to Claudie !

Arturo is responsible for introducing me to the world of Park West Galleries’ auctions on CCL Spirit. He took the time to educate and inspire me to become a more serious collector of art. Although I didn’t collect all that I wanted on that cruise, I have certainly made up for it since. Arturo is testament to the quality of people that are part of the Park West family and I hope that our paths cross again so that I can thank him personally.

We had the pleasure of meeting Arturo and Clauide on the Getaway in October 2014. Working with them to expand our art collection was the best experience. They were the friendliest and nicest auctioners. We loved working with them and are so happy for them. Our son Nate had a blast as he attended the auctions and learned to appreciate art at a very young age. Thank you for making the experience worhtwhile. We wish you all the joy and happiness in the world. God bless both of you. Sincerely, Michael, Chris and Nate.

On March 27 2015, our last night on the Norwegian Getaway, I was looking to buy Art that could be enjoyed for a long long time…and ended up buying Nano Lopez’s ‘Eighteen’ . The work is fascinating but our meeting Claudie sealed it for us. She was very helpful, patient and sincere…..and helped introduce us to Nano Lopez’s methods. I am now hoping to but a second work by this Artist. Thank you Claudie and congratulations to you and Arturo,
