AUGUSTE RODIN (November 12, 1840 – November 17, 1917)

  • Nationality: French
  • Field: Sculpture
  • Art Movement: Realism
  • ARTiFact: His second life-size sculpture, The Age of Bronze (1877), caused quite a controversy in that it was untraditional, commemorating neither a mythological nor noble historical event. Additionally, his mastery of form, light, and shadow was so realistic that critics accused him of creating the piece by surmoulage — taking a cast from a living model; a committee of sculptors eventually exonerated him.
  • Artist Quote: “Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.”
  • Notable Artwork (shown below): The Thinker, 1879-1889.
