Taking Art to New Dimensions in SoHo

In Art & Gallery News, Jay "Jbon" Bonadio Jr., New York Museum, Viktor Shvaiko

Fine art paintings don’t always live in a two-dimensional world. In our latest exhibition, Dimensions of Familiarity: From Textured Creations to Timeless Streets, each artist adds their own dimension to their paintings. Jay “Jbon” Bonadio, Jr. creates art that pops off the canvas in a very tactile way, while Viktor Shvaiko weaves the flow of time to his creations. They are two artists taking familiar subject matters and adding layers of intrigue through their use of time and space. Come see for yourself, January 16 – 29 at Park West Gallery in SoHo, NYC.

Bonadio has created his own signature artwork style called “Neo-Mosaic.” He starts by building his own frames then stretching the canvas by hand to make sure it will hold up to the weight of the heavy textures and Neo Mosaic glasswork he adds to his paintings. Once he has created the underlying design, he starts adding shattered glass and other 3D elements, such as jewelry and feathers. He plays with the shadows, sharpness and unique elements to draw the viewer in. His inspiration comes from nature, but his Neo-Mosaic techniques expand the subject matters into new realms.

Shvaiko plays with the element of time within his art. He grew up in Russia then worked his way down to Italy, selling his paintings on the street to get by. Now he is a US citizen. Those years of wandering through Europe provided inspiration for his contemporary work. He starts with little cafes and intimate tableaus based on places he visited, turning them into ideal scenes that express his impressions or feelings of each locale. To add the dimension of time, there are hints like the angle of shadows or radiant sunshine, showing time of day. Peeling walls or faded paint give viewers a sense of how time has passed and affected the scene he’s depicting. On what seems like a simple streetscape, closer inspection reveals a story told over time.

Park West Gallery invites you to explore time and space with this exhibition. Each artist creates artwork you can spend time with, soaking in the intimate details to discover new dimensions of familiar places. The exhibition runs January 16 – 29, at the SoHo Gallery in New York City – located at 411 W. Broadway along Gallery Row.
