Mills, born in 1999, grew up in Botley, a small village on England’s south coast between Southampton and Portsmouth. Raised in the countryside by hard-working parents alongside her older brother, she describes her childhood as simple and close-knit. A natural introvert, she began painting and drawing at age four, inspired by her grandmother, who painted as a hobby. Now a self-taught artist living in London, Mills credits those early moments with her grandmother for setting her on her artistic path. Early on, Mills focused on realism, creating artwork from garden flowers and the surrounding landscapes she observed – these early works still hang in her parents’ and grandparents’ homes.
After forays into abstraction and more grown-up attempts at making realism her own, Mills tapped into cubism. However, the bright and bold style gaining attention around the world today didn’t happen overnight. She spent years trying new techniques to develop a style that suited her. She was seeking an artistic approach as individual and unique as she was, something she could do with multiple subjects and themes, that would allow Mills to express herself in a myriad of ways on canvas.
Her work initially took inspiration from Picasso, but Mills didn’t want to replicate Picasso’s groundbreaking style. She fused cubism with elements of abstract Art Deco, incorporating bold color palettes and rigid geometric forms. Before she knew it, she created her very own distinctive style of art.
Heavily influenced by travel, Mills paints both places she has visited—such as New York City and cities throughout Europe—and imagined destinations still on her horizon. Using vivid imagination and heavy-body acrylic paints, she brings these scenes to life, manifesting a sense of future travel for herself and for those who encounter her work.
Being a Virgo, Mills meticulously plans her use of color and shape, ensuring that what appears abstract to the viewer is also carefully structured and balanced.
Whether depicting her cubist interpretation of Santorini’s whitewashed, blue-domed buildings or a speedboat cutting through ocean waves, each Chloe Victoria Mills’ artwork offers a transformative experience that invites inspiration.
