See Light and Color in a Whole New Way at Park West’s Las Vegas Gallery
Take the richness of a 17th-century Baroque painting, the delicate intricacy of 14th-century metallic leafing, and fuel them with the imagination and artistry of a modern thinker. Multimedia artist Patrick Guyton developed this unique style, coining it Gilded Modernism, and you’ve never seen anything like it. Enjoy his carefully crafted work during our Guyton exhibition, Light Reveals. Color Transforms. at Park West Gallery in Las Vegas, now through November 5.
Guyton imbues depth into each artwork by carefully crafting stories, layering metal leafing, paint, and glaze, creating something beyond the usual surface work of most paintings. He infuses centuries of techniques with poetic expression, incredible scale, and stunning color. At times, he begins with a most unexpected canvas – aluminum.
The multilayered process takes up to 100 days to create a single piece. Guyton begins by applying silver and gold leaf on the aluminum surface, using painstaking detail. Next, he involves both chemicals and electricity to prepare that leafing for paint. This process creates one-of-a-kind patterns. There is no going back or starting over in this journey, as each step he makes is irreversible.
Once the surface is complete, the painting begins, which includes paint and then layer upon layer of translucent glazing that reflects light, giving the underpainting a luminous glow and gem-like saturation. The interplay of metallic leaf, paint, and glaze adds incredible warmth to Guyton’s pieces, as if they are lit from within.
Guyton’s storied past fuels his art. He paints animation cels. As a musician, he engages all his senses, which cross over into ethereal work. Combining his talents, including the ancient electrostatic process that enhances his paintings, he is truly a unique painter and creator.
