Music and Art Create Pop-Realism in SoHo

In Art & Gallery News, New York Museum, Stickman

It’s gritty. It’s fresh. It’s complex yet easy on the eyes. It’s the latest artworks by Trevor “Stickman” Stickel. Stickman uses his unique blend of realism, pop art and impressionism to create art that pays tribute to pop culture, music, and iconic imagery with a rebellious edge. Now through January 15, at Park West Gallery in SoHo, NYC, is your chance to take in the full rock and roll art experience that is Pop Culture Unbound: Stickman’s Pop-Realism World.

In his early days, Stickman divided his artistic time between doing family portraits and airbrush artwork on helmets and Harleys. After reading According to the Rolling Stones, he was struck by the idea of combing his two artistic tracts to create a style wholly his own.

He leaned into his love of rock and roll and its culture of rebellion and the fight for freedom of expression. Channeling the ethos and lore of rock into fine art tributes to its giants is what gives Stickman’s artwork a vibrant energy. It also makes it an interactive experience for collectors as they discover the tribute behind each painting.

Some paintings are easy, like pop art renderings of icons like Mick Jagger. Others are more subtle, like the statue of David with Ziggy Stardust makeup on his face. Or one showing a mirror ball splashing into a glass of lemonade with a piece of candy next to it – a tribute to Marcy Playground’s Sex and Candy, which references disco lemonade in the lyrics.

Now collected around the globe, Stickman was featured as a solo exhibition at the Cornell Art Museum, appeared as a cover feature in Modern Drummer Magazine, contributed a commissioned artwork for Cheap Trick’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, created a commission for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders Allegiant Stadium, and has been included in many important private collections.

Park West Gallery invites you to feel the emotion Stickman pours into everything he creates. Feel the rock and roll vibe, now through January 15, at the SoHo Gallery in New York City – located at 411 W. Broadway along Gallery Row.
