Cathi was born in Sussex, England in 1957. Whiting gained an honors degree at Winchester School of Art, concentrating on illustrative printmaking, primarily on serigraphy and lithography, along with etching and relief printing. She subsequently set up her own atelier in Lincoln. In 1981, she went to work with the Peter Morson Studio. Quickly after, she moved to Rosenstiels of Chelsea where she started to produce her own prints and various design work. Her work was soon discovered and taken up by galleries all over the U.S., as well as Spain, France, England, and Japan.
Whiting also spent seasons in Cote d’Azur, taking in the light of the Mediterranean. She paints sensations of color that play with the effects of light. Her images are intense visual experiences.
In her Artist’s Statement, Cathi says:
“In my painting I play with color and balance. They are not of one place or time; rather, a scrapbook, fragments from places visited, events seen, elements that catch my eye. I work mainly with acrylic and oil pastel on paper and canvas. Some of these images I replicate in limited edition serigraphic prints, returning to my formative training.
“I enjoy the process of building up the colors to the final product. My fine art prints are produced totally by hand from the separation of each color to the printing. Each print will be made up of an average of 35 screens, representing different colors, and these are individually processed building up to the final completed print. By printing in this way I can reproduce the intensity of color in the prints that I bring to my paintings.”
Her work has been exhibited in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Bologna, New York, Osaka, and Tokyo.
