Fitzgerald’s style combines the themes and techniques of the European masters, such as Rembrandt, with his own infusion of contemporary aesthetics. The results range from capturing a touching moment between a young couple nestled together in a pub to glowing goldfish hovering over a remote mountain path as dusk settles in.
Like the masters of old, Fitzgerald paints using oil paint on an old wooden palate. He feels while oil paint is a long, grueling process there’s a quality you get from oil paint that you don’t get from anything else. He also likes working in charcoal. Some of his finished artworks are charcoal drawings, but often charcoal sketches are the starting point for his paintings. He even holds his brushes the way the old masters did.
Fitzgerald’s methodology creates artwork that looks and feels like a Renaissance era master had been transported to our current timeline and painted modern world subjects with his old-world techniques.
