Marcus Glenn on Detroit Public TV

Marcus Glenn, one of three artists in Park West Gallery’s “Detroit’s Finest” exhibition series, was recently featured on Detroit Public TV.

Glenn appears in an episode of “Detroit Performs,” where he speaks about how he was initially inspired by his mother to pursue art. He was further inspired by the Egyptian exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts as a student.

Glenn speaks about his “Flat Life” style, which incorporates fabrics and textile papers in his paintings to create brilliant mixed-media works. He explains the meaning behind his heart-themed “Love Series” as well as his artistic process.

“The process is just taking in life and being able to infuse those things that I appreciate and kind of put it into my art,” he says. “Sometimes life is not always so pretty, and that is the thin line – how do you make negative things or things that are going on in the world, how do you put it into your art and make it appealing?”

Glenn says he hopes to contribute to the world in a positive way with his artwork, and is able to do so with Park West Gallery and in his Detroit studio.

“I think I’m showing Detroit that there are a lot of positive things here in the city, there are creative people here in this city, and we’re making an impact on life,” Glenn says. “I’m here in the D and I think I’m going to stay in the D.”

The full episode, “Art Out of Materials,” features other local artists and museum curators. View the episode here.

Glenn is joined by artists Tim Yanke and Dominic Pangborn in the “Detroit’s Finest” exhibition series, which runs from June 28 to August 16.
